COOPER'S GENERAL STORE | OPEN

Founded in 1869 by Alphonse Cooper and his son, Adrian. It was one of the earliest buildings in Strawberry, alongside the post office and the clinic. The Coopers came soon after the first talk of struck gold spread through West Elizabeth, taking advantage of the miners who would now need a place to spend their money.

Originally, the store sold all the necessities a mining man could need- tools, game, and liquor. However, this would change as the town grew and civilized itself- with that civilization came temperance. Strawberry would soon become a dry town; what is now the saloon was little more than room and board when it was built.

The Coopers saw the opportunity this provided and began to distill their liquor in private. No more were spirits stocked on the shelves; now it was made and bottled in the basement and sent out to neighboring towns or locals for a quick buck.

Eventually, the Coopers were caught, and the store exchanged hands.

There is no more need for a still in the basement with the local saloon up and running. Though, who says spare money ever has to be a need for the industrious man who may own it? Perhaps a thrill is enough on its own.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES

Players who own and operate the Cooper's General Store are not required to abide by any firm guidelines or rules - the location may be operated and maintained to the satisfaction of the owning shopkeep. â€‹

HORNER & CO. GENERAL STORE | OPEN

What is now known as Horner & Co. General Store was originally a tavern for incoming sailors in the early days of the city. By the early 1800s, the city expanded, and the building fell out of use until 1812, when F.W. Horner, of the Horner & Co. Shipping Company purchased it.

A local farmer-turned businessman by the name of J. Barenbaum purchased half interest in the store near the beginning of 1879. He would bring much of the local produce trade to its doorstep, which created competition for the S.D. Market. This proved so fruitful that by the summer of 1881, he would buy the other half as well.

Despite this success, life had other plans; J. Barenbaum died in 1884, and the ownership was passed down to his brother, M. Barenbaum. Being no man of business, he opted to sell off his ownership, and there it sits- waiting for the next man who can squeeze it for all it has.

With its location near the heart of Saint Denis and the docks, this store could prove very lucrative for the right person.

RHODES GENERAL STORE | OPEN

What is now known as Rhodes General was constructed in 1878 by Henry T. Watts with a modest loan from the Bank of Rhodes. Owned and run with assistance from the once proud Gray family, it would stay this way until 1883. At that time, it was sold off to a dentist from Atlanta, who famously ran it into the ground.

Now, it's kept up by the bank itself, which is more than willing to pass it onto another interested party.

It's a perfect location for the man who wants to set down roots and become part of a charming community.

S.M NEELY GENERAL STORE | OPEN

One of the earliest businesses established in Blackwater, it would change many times in look and size over the years. Constructed not long after the town was founded, it drew many people to the area and contributed greatly to the town's growth early on.

Sawney M. Neely and Josiah Blackwater met along the trail, both men finding their way through the then untamed countryside of West Elizabeth. It was these two men who would dream up the frontier town, imagining an oasis among the rolling plains for travelers to pass through or set down roots.

Despite frequent attacks from the nearby Comanche, the town grew, and once the tribe was forced out of the county, it grew even more.

S.M. Neely General Store has continued to be an important landmark of the town, and even though it has changed hands many times since its opening, it still bears the name of Sawney Neely.

To the right-minded individual, this would bring many an opportunity. A steady flow of money, a sense of value among those in the community, and, if you were an adventurous spirit, plenty of less than orthodox ways of making a living.

WORTHS GENERAL STORE | OPEN

Originally built as a repository for local farms before becoming a general store, it is thought to be one of the first centers of commerce in the county. It was once home to one of many villages attributed to the Wapiti Indians, over which a large battle was fought in the 1830s.

After the military forced the tribe out, many settlers stayed to construct the barebones of what would become Valentine. However, others scattered to the nearby areas of New Hanover, carving ranches and farms out of its rolling plains.

Worths is now the center of commerce among the entire county, providing tools and amenities for the ranchers and farmers who frequent it.

It has always been plagued by rumors of less than legal activities; many have heard stories of it doubling as a fence for the few farmhands who try their luck at being highwaymen. Though most folk see it as nonsense, there are those who swear their lives on it, and among the believers, half would rather look the other way. After all, it's none of my business.

Any future owners have many avenues to take it. A clean staple of the community? Or a stop-zone for under-the-table deals?
